Michael Jackson is dead at age 50

WOW! I was driving home today when I heard that they had taken him to the hospital for a cardiac problem. So young...A very talented performer with a checkered history.

(comments withheld- Basil would ban me for life)

A "Thriller" with a troubled soul.
His lifetime of music will remain
innovative and special.

I can't help thinking that he had far, far too much, far, far too young....

Great talent, strange man/child.....nuff said.

May the dead rest in peace.

You can say what you want about him but all of today's pop music you can trace to him.

Love him or hate him, there was only one Michael Jackson........RIP

I have to admit, I haven't thought about Michael Jackson in terms of his music in the best part of fifteen years. That would be the last time he produced something I actually liked. Since then he's basically been a tabloid figure for me, nothing more. A truly strange, damaged individual.

Did anyone see the online catalog for the auction that was supposed to clear out most of the Neverland estate? The video game section was an Aladdin's Castle for gamers of a certain age!

Michael Jackson was a hugely influential figure both in pop music and in modern dance too, let's not forget that. His passing overshadowed that of Farrah Fawcett earlier in the day, and also Ed McMahon earlier in the week.

Where am I going with this?

On Wednesday 17th June, one Darrell Powers passed away at the age of 84. Better known by his nickname of "Shifty", he was a sergeant in Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Made immortal by the HBO series, Band of Brothers, his name would not have been as well known by the masses, but should have merited more of a mention. This was a man who not only went and laid his life on the line, but volunteered for the more hazardous role that he took on. In the grand scheme of things, this was a man who did more, contributed more, and in his own way left a greater legacy than all the showbiz personalities put together.

Okay, off my soapbox now.......

Shifty passing, I have the CD set and still watch it when ever it's on the history channel.
That and Saving Private Ryan, 2 best war flicks out there, JMHO.

When one looks at great artists, they often find that those who live in the far left side of their brains, produce great artistic creations. From Michelangelo and Mozart to Jim Henson and Michael Jackson....something about that type of talent and drive makes living in the the "main stream" difficult...but without them our world would lose a lot of color, art, and joy. Whatever I thought of him and his private life...I think his contributions to pop music were phenomenal and he will be missed. The "Thriller" is gone...RIP.

I would have liked to have known about Shifty, but there were no articles that I saw on the 17th, including here at the Pub. We sure knew about Bob Bogle's passing on the 17th, but not Shifty's. Quite a shame...

The Rulez would have me expunged. Suffice it to say there has never been a conscious Jackson subsidy from me in the entire run. The acquisition of the Beatles legacy had me tweaked, too. Can't separate the individual from the 'artistic contribution'.

Call me judgemental. <shrug>
