Mice - what works for you?

I have stored cars in Canada for most of the last 30 years. Lots of bounce dryer sheets will keep the little rascals at bay.
By this I mean, a couple under the hood three or four in the passenger compartment, and a couple in the trunk. Works better than mothballs, and certainly smell better every spring.

I have heard that too..Mothballs are bad news,, they are really a bad pesticide for anyone to breath.
 
Bad problem with them coming out of alphalfa fields...only option that works for us is DCON....when we find them dead pickup and dispose..
 
Ordinarily I would have backed the cat approach, the next door neighbor has one and there is not much sign of mouse activity, that's the good side.

The bad side is - every day this week the cat has taken to using my back door step as it's toilet area.

So on balance, I favour the shot gun approach for the cat and a Little Nipper mouse trap or two for the pesky rodents.

I just drive around with the mouse until a see an open garage with Porshes or Corvettes in it and release :smile:

Mice can be heck on old cars. On another forum a fellow was talking about how he tried everything he could to get rid of the critters. They had eaten through his wiring loom and chewed up his carpet and had nested in his engine compartment.

After three years of a losing battle he broke down and got a cat and kept it locked in the garage at night. Within a week no more mice!

Dryer sheets (lots!) in the car.

Glue traps around the periphery of the garage.
 
Several drops of peppermint oil (the real stuff) on cotton balls works well. To mazimize the effectiveness, put several in a disposable plastic food container, and make some perforations in the lid. Replace every couple of weeks. Not toxic to pets, kids.
 
For those of you that use HAGERTY, check out their recient e-Newsletter (Dec. 2009). They posted an article regarding this topic. One point that has not been mentioned, is to cover your exhust and air intake. I guess some guy did an engine rebuild and found a mouse carcass resting "piece"-fully on a piston. Other then that, much of what has been suggested in this thread is covered in the article. There may be a few other bits of info worth reading. Not sure that I could "re-post" the article in full on this site, but if there are any non-Hagerty members interested in readingit, I believe I can send it by e-mail. If that's the case, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll try e-mailing it to you. One other item that is worth mentioning, if you don't like the smell of Irish Spring, or you have a favorite rider that does not like that smell, DO NOT USE IT as a mouse deterrent in your car. It will end up smelling like rancid soap after awhile.

Anybody consider nameing the lil'criders and keeping them as a friend?
 
I too had them eat Irish Spring which was in drawer for hygiene not keeping mouse away. After reading umpteen reviews both pro and con I bought (Ace Hardware) those electric high frequency sound makers and since putting them in bathroom of cabin (summer use only) in woods of WY, when I return in Spring for the first time mouse free. Perhaps put one on garage floor each side of car and one facing upward on floor under engine compartment.
