TR4/4A Miata seats in a TR4?

Anyone with experience putting Mazda Miata seats in a TR4?

I have found articles on the web for putting these seats in TR6s and Spitfires, but I have not found any information if anyone tried them on a TR4.

Safety is the issue. I have been rear-ended twice here in So-Cal (both with idiots on cell phones) and not really interested in having that experience in my TR4 with the low back seats.

Here's mine:

I don't think they are out yet, but I believe Uncle Jack / Joe Alexander are designing some mounting brackets for this conversion. Everything I've bought from Joe has been top notch, so they should make fitting Miata seats a breeze.

this should be combined with the other post. I'm sure the mounts are the same or close.

FWIW -- I believe the discussion on team.net revealed there were several configuations of seats used in the Miatas -- the planned kit may only work for some.

Just a heads-up if you have not yet sourced the seats.

Thanks everybody for the great information. It is useful when starting a project like this to see if it has been done before. I like the looks of my original low back seats, but times change. When I bought my TR over 30 years ago it did not have seat belts and the seats were held down with 1 bolt. Now I kind of like the idea of something a little safer where my neck won’t snap off from a hit from the back. I like Ian’s pictures of the Miata seats as they look like they fit well. The speakers in the headrest are an added bonus. I think I will pickup some seats at a junkyard (anyone know of a good one in the San Diego area?) and engineer some brackets myself.

Thanks again for the info,
Cheers,
Paul

I agree - the later model TR4s had the same seat tracks as the TR6, so I'm sure they would work. Not sure about the earlier style tracks though.

Ian - did you make up custom mounting brackets?

I took the standard design that is on the web and modified it as I don't have access to metal benders anymore. I bolted a couple of formed angles together to make the channel section and I also lowered it a bit more at the front for thigh clearance. It didn't work for me with the original steering wheel, so I put in a smaller diameter dished Mota-Lita wheel, which is much better and looks great.
