OOOOOOKKKKKK! - This is getting a little weird.
Our Son needs a car when the weather turns bad,as he's
high-functioning Autistic,an automatic would be preferable.
He doesn't have any money,& no mechanical (automotive) skills,
& he's not a car person.
The Cortina runs great right now,but has some rust problems
that will only get worse.The Volvo is probably the best choice,but
part of me would like a car to run autocrosses & hillclimbs in.
I was basicly trying to find out which models (240,245,740,etc.)
were the best vehicles.Any help without references to marrying your-
sister,etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Given yor criteria I'd say any BMW 3 series but I may be a bit biased.

Sheesh.... I guess first cousins are OK???

If the primary user and use is for day-to-day transport and mundane stuff where capacity and relaibility are more important then I suspect the Volvo would be the more practical...

Of course, for someone with three LBCs, one of which is a 50 year old kit car, I KNOW all about practical (NOT)....

Doug, mid 80s to 93 (last year) 245s are great. Simple too.Japanese 4 speed automatics. Only thing that ever goes in them is the rear seal and output bushing. Parts are cheap and it is an easy fix. Before the mid 80s you get weird engine management systems (regina, or in the 70s Bosch K jetronic) Harder to diagnose, and to get parts for. 745s, and 945s are pretty much the same mechanically, but have more electronic stuff inside the cars.Much easier to find turbos though, and they are pretty trouble free too. If the timing belt breaks, no damage done, and it is like a 2 hour job to change them. If autocrossing is a big part of the decision, look up IPD. Good selection of proven handleing and performance parts for the swedes.Good alternative for you might be a 145. The pushrod engines are bulletproof, and the cars are even simpler. Very few left on my coast though. Miatas are OK, but the Volvos are really useful.
