T-Series MGTD Factory Original Color

I'm currently restoring car no. TD/24613 and would like to determine its original color. It's now black, but when I first saw it in 1956 it was a badly faded tan / green (faded from the Texas sun). My body rebuilder asks whether I have a "Heritage certificate" - - never heard of it! Would appreciate any suggestions, beyond the general info from shop manuals and the "Color Schemes (TD & TF)" listed in Clausager, "Original MG T Series".

Google "British Motor Industry Heritage Trust." You can get the certificate from them, and it will have all the information about the car's original color, equipment, and production dates. That's the gold standard for these things. I had one for my Sprite; dunno if I'll blow for it for the MG, though.
 
The Certificate is a proper way to get documentation and good as a display item when the car is finished. :thumbsup:

The T-series cars with the tan/green scheme are really attractive, IMHO.
 
I like the Heritage Certificates -- a neat way to verify what was original to your car. You need to go here:

Unfortunately, as I look at the site it looks like they may only have them back to the MG TF (no TC or TD). You may want to email them directly and see if they can provide any more info. Your TD *might* have a certificate available as from what I've found they have records back to 1953. Worth a note to them asking.

I did pull this from the MG T register:

  • Chassis No: TD24613
  • Engine No: XPAG/TD2/24977
  • Build Date: 30-Jan-1953
  • Notes: TD24613 EXLNA
EXLNA just means export, LHD, North America. No note on original colors.
 
Dang, Drew, you're right--they just go back to '53.

In a sense though, this is liberating. If no one can document your car's oriignal color, you're completely free to make it whatever you wish, without any nagging concerns for originality.

Actually, like Doc E, I like the combination of green and beige. It's my favorite car combo. Very warm and handsome, and the two colors complement each other well, I think.
 
If the car has never been totally stripped, as in a frame off restro, it's possible the original color could be behind the running boards or fenders where they bolt to the tub. I found my TFs original color, (MG Red), behind the running boards, but no where else. PJ
One thing nice about TFs though, the original color is registered.
