MG'S

they are not available in the US but I have heard that a couple have been granted special short term visa's for testing/show purposes also heard that a british officer stationed in DC was allowed to bring his with him

I don't own one but there are a reansonable number of MGF/TFs over here (Australia) and I know of a couple of people that own one. the Z series saloons area lso avaiable over here but at prohibitively expensive prices.

I even had the opportunity to drive one of them once although as it had only just been given by my boss at the time to his wife as a surprise birthday present that day and so I was very nevous about driving it and as a result I only took it around the block.

My impression of it from that brief drive was a very solid competent sports car with all controls being in typical MG style layout and with a good solid feel, a bit like a rear engined Honda CRX.

The engine made the biggest impression on me, it was quite possibly the smoothest 4 cylinder I've ever driven (it was a not a variable valve cam version)and for a mid engined car was surprisingly quiet.

I wasn't that impressed with the paint finish though, lots of orange peel in the paintwork but I have seen others that seem not to have that problem.

A couple of the smaller local car hire companies have them on offer, I may have to try one out for a longer spin one of these days, see how it really compares with my MGB and MGC GT.

regards

Tom

Hi Jamie,

The basics here in North America are this:

MG and/or Rover cars have not been sold for years, since 1980/1981 - there was a Rover-based car called the Sterling 825 & 827 sold in the United States (and not Canada) during the late-1980's with very little success - don't know which Rover off hand but looked like a Honda/Acura Integra.

The Range Rover has been sold since 1987, and the Land Rover since, I think, 1994.

As for export rules...

In the States a car not originally sold there has to be 25 years old or older to import it in, then you have to conform to existing laws to road certify it.

For Canada take the same basic rules but the car has to 15 years old or older.

So... eventually at a certain age some of these cars could potentially be brought over and road certified, but not quite yet. Although keep your eyes on Canada, perhaps someone might eventually bring over an MGF or an MG RV8 when they're able to, it will be a while longer for the States.

And as mentioned previously, when embassy workers come over they are able to bring over personal cars that don't fit into the above criteria, but they can't sell the cars and have to take them back home when their posting is done.

The conclusion, we don't get many of the fun new British and European cars over here, as most of them abandoned car sales here years ago

Recall that post from way back, just temporarily forgot about it. Vacation in Mexico? Then rent an MGF... sounds cool

I agree and also disagree... My understanding is that the Sterling was a copy of the Rover 800 series from the U.K., a Rover model which in turn was a re-badged Honda. Because I know that starting with the Triumph Acclaim of 1982ish there were a number of re-badged Honda's sold as MG/Rover models in the U.K. (I'm not sure when this practice ended). Some of our U.K. members would likely know more about these pseudo-Honda's, or maybe they're trying to forget.
