This car is a VERY well built CLONE of the original MGRV8 introduced in 1993. The owner did a FANTASIC job and spared NO EXPENSE (I'm willing to bet he has over $100,000 in this car)in creating an authentic reproduction using genuine RV8 body panels.

He does NOT display this car as a true RV8. It is built around a donor MGB..hence the MGB VIN, etc.

This car was indeed at Grand Rapids ...and took Best of Show if memory serves me correctly.

At this time, I believe it is illegal to import a factory RV8 into the United States and license it here for personal use. Visitors *may* be able to bring a personal vehicle in on a one-year temporary "visa" for personal use during their stay here.

Thought about that also - probably wouldn't be hard to fly over, buy one, put a '65 VIN on it & get it registered in Alabama...trouble would come when it was involved in a wreck & the adjuster found out what it was....insurance company would then invalidate my policy & I'd lose everything in a lawsuit....

I've thought this thing through &, with exception of kit car status, can't see a perfectly legal way to do it.

...except to ask for variance to import one for my collection (& I've had that request in to the DOT for several years with no answer)....
 
Tony, I wonder if the one from Zanesville is the one that I saw in Dayton. Most likely.
 
Ahh Rick, thanks. I THOUGHT that looked exactly like the RV8 at GR, but wasn't sure. It is a phenomenal car, absolutely gorgeous and I'd give Chuck's right leg for one.
 
Tony I believe you could insure it through Haggerty, they have provisions for modifications
 
1993 is not old enough (yet) to import for personal use. I believe that the car must be 25 years old.

There is a provision for bringing in "significant" cars...the RV8 does not fall into that category, either. There are a LOT of hoops to jump through with the EPA and the DOT for this provision to be utilized and approved.
 
Seems to me you could get one for "non-personal" use... Like you said "just for your collection", or as a centerpiece for your "MG Museum". You prolly wouldn't get to drive her, but you'd "have" it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Well I know I see a lot of vehicles in the Customs wearhouse in LA. I've seen old RHD Minis from the UK, Skylines from Japan and even a few military vehicles like a really cool British Ferret. I'd also seen a few Lotus Elises come over piror to them being sold legally. Most came over without their engine and had a Toyota powerplant installed I believe.

My point is there has got to be a way of doing it legally but I'll bet it involves jumping through a lot of hoops.
 
I helped assist an East coast enthusiast in the navigation of the "hoops" to bring a 2004 MGTF Limited Edition into the States.

The wheels of beaurocracy turn EXTREMELY slowly. THis began several months ago. The car is still in England.
 
So, Rick, can you guide me through the "hoops"?
