calm down Gary, I think it's his car and he can have it his way. Personally I think the v6 is the way to go, nothing that can't be put back to stock later

If it was my MGB and it needed a new motor I'd go with a Chevy 3.4L V6 / T5 from a Camaro. Easy 200hp and cheap. Practically bolt in (and out) with a kit.

Crossflow aluminum head on 5 main 1800 with two Webers....and a 5 speed or O/D trans.

To each his own, but I'd even prefer a nice "breathed-on" MGB engine to a Rover V-8. Suits the overall car better, methinks.

Note: a Chevy V-8 requires almost irreversible "hacking".

Who mentioned a Chev V8? I said a V6 which is almost as light as the Rover V8. There are a couple kits for Chevy 60 degree V6s that bolt into rubber bumper Bs. I wouldn't want a big heavy Chevy V8 in a B.

I wasn't responding to you....I was reponding to adam's original topic title:

"Topic: MGB V8's and V6's "

Presumably, his question referred to various V8s....including Chev, Ford, Rover, etc.

For what it's worth, I agree with you about putting a big Chevrolet V-8 in these cars......I wouldn't choose the narrower Ford V-8 either...it's too much.....but I've *seen* a number of them.

In fact, I saw an MGB Chevy V-8, two MGA Chevy V-8s and a Sprite Chevy V-8 at past Moss Britfest events run here in NJ. All 350s....none of them appealed to me.

I'm quite familiar with the narrow angle GM V-6 (I helped put one in an old CJ-5 about 10 years ago). It would be a much better choice, and probably better than the Rover.....but I'd still prefer the four.

im eather thinking about the chev. V6 or the rover/olds/buick V8(arnt all of those practickly the same). but i was just wandering what are the pros and cons of the V6 compared to the V8. and how much heavyer is the V6 complared to the V8?

The 2.8/3.1/3.4L Chevy V6 is slightly more than the Rover V8 but the transmision is lighter so I think the Chevy ends up being 10-20lbs more than the V8 and develops the same sort power. Its just half the price and easy to find.

some puritsts will concede that the Rover v8 is at least British and that it was offered in British cars as a factory option. They will make substantial HP, and you get to spend twice as much

Also the exhaust note on the eight is much better.

and its got more of a cool factor

it depends on the engine. A B engine can go through 2500 really quickly for a quality job. this would include boring the block, new pistons and rings, new cam and lifters, rebushing the rocker arms, rebuilding the head, new timing chain and the list goes on and on and on. More popular engines such as the sb Chevy might be cheaper and more exotic engines way more. I have heard 4 grand for the Lotus engine in a Jensen Healey. BTW, I will be at Tony's on Friday

Rover V8...300hp at 10lb aluminum billet flywheel...& lots has happened since this photo....around $5000 in engine plus another $2000 in Rover 5-speed...&, you don't wanna know on suspension but there's probably more there than in engine/tranny combined!
see specs go to my web site.....<https://www.theautoist.com/v8_specifications.htm>
