MGB mgb trans oil drip into bellhousing

while we had an mgb jacked up at the rear for a brake job, we noticed a slight drip from the bellhousing. Reaching a fingerinto the shift fork hole revealed some gear oil dripping from the trans input shaft area.

Just wanted to make absolutely sure this means the seal/gasket at the input shaft has to be replaced, correct? IE, this isn't normal when the trans is overfilled or tipped forward....
 
Should be 30W oil in th' trans, it may be time for a new seal but it means pulling the engine/gearbox as a unit. If it's not dripping while underway I'd put a promise on it for a clutch/PP/T-O in a few months. That's a job fraught with "Might as Wells."

Doc, do you use a straight viscosity oil in the tranny? Easy to get, but I use 20/50. Viscosity is about the same. My front seal leaks a little also. <span style="font-weight: bold">Automatic under belly rust preventive!</span>

MGB always specified the same engine oil used in the engine for the trans...I always use 20W50 in both - Castrol prefferably.

& I agree with Doc to just watch things until you have to pull something.
