MGB mgb stromberg re-jet for hi-flow air filter

>>Burble? I think that that is a cry for help nearing the 6K

-laugh- indeed! After all, it isn't a Fiat X1/9 or anything

>Have you tried 3" K&N's?

nope. had an uber-kewl wire gauge vintage filter laying about. That's what it's getting.

>Soon to be funny "V" shaped splits in exhaust valves if >it's too lean! 6K is "Never-Never Land" if the fuel mix is >thin "up there"!!!

I appreciate your constructive criticism. May I refer to you as "Mr. Sunshine" from now on?

>...and "stumble" may be a better term than "burble".

8) Perhaps you'd like to drive the car? I'm sensing a hint of jealousy in your tone......

>>I got real news, if this 998cc A 40 does not get 7K it's >>gona get pulled and some serious work.

Wow. I could be wrong, but I think a 998cc MGB would be pretty rare. Or am I in the wrong forum?

Thanks again everyone for your help and advice! Being MGB-ignorant, I consulted with several experts who told me that this couldn't be done, that the carb was simply junk, and that I was wasting my time. I thank you for helping me to prove them wrong.

Sincerely,

i.e. - I've seen a burnt valve or two. <grin>

Jealous? Naaah, Eric. Got my own high revvin' toys.

"Mr Sunshine"... hmm... sure. Suits my Doom-n-Gloom nature. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Have you put a gas analyzer to it yet?

Term "anemic" would be better'n "rare." Right forum, we tend to cross-pollinate. Don't just run off now you've sorted a poxy Zed-ess as a 'statement'. This is a great place for spending some of yer innernet time.

Wood-worker then, huh? Not much of a termite problem in your area I'd guess.

To paraphrase Mr Gates: "Three wheels should be good enough for anybody."

LBCs are all supose to go Zoom Zoom. Not only that but they are all preaty much alike.

I admire your tenacity as well as your innovative needlework. I'm truly not trying to be a wise guy here, but what I don't understand is why you continue with this carburetter. Considering you've relieved the vehicle of its other emissions equipment, and it seems as though you want to optimize its performance, there are a number of carburetter choices you could make. One doesn't even require getting rid of the stock manifold. That is the HIF SU conversion carb, which I've employed succesfully for several customers. It is, in my opinion, a vast improvement. Just a thought.

me thinks it's the challenge of doing it with the carb that very few people like on the MGB.

Personally, I'm switching to an HS6 soon as I rebuild it.

I've got your HS6's twin brother Rob - hehehehehe.

>>Have you put a gas analyzer to it yet?

Nope. Maybe in the spring I'll grab some more needles and fine tune things after installing an a/f meter. This car isn't driven that hard - my earlier comment about 4-6K RPM was a test drive. The car rarely sees anything over 4K.

Agreed. Car guys are getting fewer and fewer. These forums provide a sense of community in an otherwise lonely existence. Maybe that's too philosophical.....

<laugh> Yup. Ah, the thrill of V-8 powered plywood.....

>To paraphrase Mr Gates: "Three wheels should be good enough

<grin> I'm actually a three-wheeler nut. It's how I fell into the Morgan world. Would be a lot more fun if I could actually fit into a Morgan trike, I 'spose......

As for WHY - curiousity and the challenge, I guess. This carb doesn't have the heat compensator or the decel valve - just the water choke and an air bleed. So it seemed like a good opportunity to understand them a little better. Frankly, it's a bone-simple device and I was intrigued to see what could be done with it.

Yeah, I've got a box of HIF-4's laying about, and a few H6's, and even a couple of H8's. heck, I have a spare motor out of a 'BGT with a DCOE and a header ready to go in. But that wouldn't have been as much fun.

Besides, the car is more an exercise in simplicity than performance.

FWIW, I agree that a twin-SU setup seems to belong on the car more than a single stromberg. DCOE's are nice, but just don't have the same british spirit. DGV's work well, but are just a tad sophomoric. <shrug> Just me, I guess.

No it ain't. I like SU's. "set 'em and ferget 'em" in most normal applications.

The DCOE setup I've got on the MGB was as a result of too many Alfa's and Loti with spares in my life. i.e.: FREE... Manifold is home-brew, thirtysome years ago. Runs great, and I like the 'Bark of the Weber' as much as I like to hear the SU hiss.

Noop, not at all, I think we all feel that way.

I have to disagree to an extent on that. There are still plenty of car guys out there, but there seems to be a shift on focus from the classics towards the new cars. Even if they're focusing on those new Japanese cars and low displacement sedans, they're still car guys, though some may be mislead in their concept of what's 'cool' and what isn't.

I think part of it might be what Barret Jackson has done for classic cars. While it may be good over all for the value of the classics (particularly the muscle cars), it does give the public eye a misleading idea as to the cost of getting into the hobby, and true value of the vast majority of our classics.

I'll just go sit inna corner now.
