MGB MGB starter removal

I just bought my first MGB in about 25 years, a '66 in very rough shape. I've been working Spridgets (mostly) for about 40 years and the small car starters come out easily but this "B" just won't release the motor. Looks like I have to remove the (old style) oil filter. Is this correct or can I worm the starter out, by the way, I am doing this left handed only since I broke my right arm last week and am in a cast.

I also remove the distributor so it comes out the top.

This is a good time to put in a Moss screw in oil filter. The old one is hard to put back in. I was never able to do it by myself.

That was what I was afraid of- Need to remove the (Exxon Valdiz) oil filter. Darn!! I did already remove the dist and the oil cooler lines but it looks like the filter will come off (and be replaced by a spin-on adapter) but I was hoping to wait for that.
Thanks
Bill

...and you're doin' this with one wing in a cast!?!?

I admire your pluck!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif I don't think I could lift the starter out with one wing in a cast!

I really don't have much of an option- doc said not to do ANYTHING for 6 weeks, I lasted about 6 hours. My wife just laughs and says that it is my body do with it if I must.
Bill

And you think pullin' a twenty pound starter motor outta an MGB is "outside" the ANYTHING rule... This is not good. One mis-step and the "six-week countdown" starts all over AND the discomfort as well. I'd suggest just staring at the starter sternly for a few weeks, at least.

Does this count as Dr's orders? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

wow... did the engines change that much over the years? I changed my starter on my '76 last year and all I had to do was unbolt the old and bolt in the new... Though, I can't remember if I went at it from under or over the car, but I certianly had to use both hands for the job...

Mah hat's off to you Bill if you pull this off one handed! Best of luck with this. Certainly hope you don't make matters worse in the process.

Man!! two doctors telling me the same thing? This has to be a conspiricy!!! If I were sane I wouldn't be playing with LBC's but I love the simplicity of the mechanicals and am drawn to playing with them no matter what. OK so I guess that I'll break down and remove the oil filter and even ask my wife to help pull out the starter (its a beginning). I think that I will go nuts if I don't do SOMETHING!! (I'll bet Jack understands this??)

As do I, Bill: I was in a similar circumstance, a retinal detachment... my angst at being "hobbled" (and my subsequent ~defiance~ of "course of treatment") caused me to have to undergo an amazingly MORE complex set of proceedures. GIVE IT ~TIME~ DUDE!!!

READ!!! Play chess with your S.O.... Post to BCF!

...Do anything but stress your injury.

Take my word on this. It can make a difference in your "quality of life".

Yep follow the Doctors orders or you will be down much longer than six weeks. And i do understand, have not had such a great outlook in years since I started this little car.

BOTH doctors. The accredited one and the one from Elsonore... Both speak from experience: One emperical, one antecdotal. You decide which is which. The outcome will be th' same. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

OK- this was Friday afternoon and I had a free hour-- that starter was making me mad, so- off came the generator, coil, oil filter and the starter came out just as nicely as you please. Problem was that it bench tested fine, the solenoid was BAD. Oh well, live and learn and now I know how to fix a solenoid and I really did want to segment the starter commutator anyway!!
Bill
PS- now I can play chess with my wife again.

mehheh. You're an ANIMAL, Bill! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Open the solenoid & rotate the disc.
