a good friend of mine has a 1976 mg midget (federal) no cat-verter. he put in a new fuel pump, fuel lines, filter, and cecked the fel tank for f.o.d. he can start the car but can only travel up to a mile when the thing conks out, hes convinced its a matter of fuel starvation, im going to rebuild the carb this week end, im not familiar with the "idiot-sincrasees" of this model, can you give me an idea what else to look for that might be causing this problem,or what might be causing this problem. thanks in advance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Might the spridget fourm be a good place for this? But hay all these engine things are preaty much the same till you get down to the nitty gritty.

Got fire, got fuel she go. Think I would check coil and condencer right up front.

how sure is he that he's getting fuel? Has he pulled the fuel line from the carb when it dies?

IMO, more likely to be an electrical problem on one of these...

He travels a mile and the motor just dies?

Does it start again?

Maybe it's a clogged ELC system? Maybe the fuel bowl isn't breathing causing the jet not to flow.

Check the charcoal canister(s) and the hoses - you have one op on top of the passengers-side footwell and maybe one down under the bumper (later cars did, I'm not sure about the '76). You may have a clog here, or perhaps your carb is overflowing and clogging the canister.

Does the car still have the original OPUS electronic dizzy? You can tell if it does because the dizzy will have a big rectangular box attached to it. These have been known to go bad. In fact, BL at the time replaced these under warranty with a remote amplifier electronic ignition. If you can swap in a known good dizzy (or even a points system) you can see if the dizzy is the problem.

Good point, CK. Pertronix also makes a good replacement for an OPUS. Welcome aboard, by the way.

gas cap vented?
