MGB MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the fan?

So I replaced the water pump on the 73 MGB on Monday. I'm waiting for the rad shop to turn the radiator around. I found an NOS fan at Carlisle a few years ago, so I decided to dig that out and install it while I had stuff apart.

Which brings me to the question... Moss, et al catalogs show a black "fan spacer", but none of my manuals seem to indicate where this thing goes (in front of the fan, like a giant lockwasher - or behind the fan to nudge it toward the rad). Anyone know for sure?

See this photo; the thing I'm referring to is the black ring inside the fan hub.

It's to keep the bolt heads from digging into the plastic. You've got it right in the photo.

Well, I guessed right then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I also glassbeaded the alt fan and the pulley and lubed the bearings. Aren't they pretty? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

Guilty as charged.

It's a garage queen, but I'm trying to change that now that she has the first door ding. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Drive th' wheels off'n it!!! An MGB is an infinitely renewable resource. Only thing to change that would be the demise of gasoline... Then we rejet the carbs and run 'em on hydrogen!

... and I work for the world's largest producer of hydrogen, so I have no excuse!

Pretty. I wish my engine bay was that nice... Well one day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

That's one thing I've always liked about a lot of older, classic cars; if you had to, you could run them on almost anything combustible. One day when the gasoline runs out (or gets too bloody expensive for anyone but Trump to afford), I might have to try running the B on moonshine.

It might run alright, but the people driving behind me are probably going to get pulled over and convicted of DUI /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

*sigh*

~money~ is now an *issue*. And I'm waiting for MacGregor to send me the hardtop seals. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

Ain't it always? I'm really glad I got the majority of my toyota parts before my work dropped the no OT shoe. I'll go buy the tool I need to get the stripped bolt off, and I should just have to put it all back together. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

I'm kinda *crabby* over it, but hey, "this too shall pass." After I'm done knittin' this SQL server project up & running I can concentrate on Herself's ride again.

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

Safety wire on the fan bolts. That's awesome! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

Total overkill Scott. I never liked the original lock-tabs (they always deformed on me) so as I was reassembling I went all "creative," cross-drilled the bolt heads and wired 'em up. I'd not used my safety wire pliers in a long time and wanted some practice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Re: MGB plastic fan "spacer" - which side of the f

yeah.... it IS a lot of fun to clamp them on then pull the knob and watch'em spin 'n twist the wires... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

haven't done that since my days in the Corps... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
