Greetings fellow British Car lovers. I am new to the forum and hope to soon be part of the great MGB fraternity. I am the past owner of a TR7 roadster and (2) TR6's. My TR7 was unique in the fact that it was an automatic. One of my TR6's was unique because at some point it had been equipped with a TR8 engine and 5spd Transmission. So while I am familiar with the TR's I hope some of you guys may be able to fill me in on the idiosyncrasies of the MGB. Thanks for any Help. KyReb1862 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

LBC's whether 'rumph or MG have a great deal in common. Joe Lucas & Sons to name the obvious... so your prior transgressions will stand you in good stead as an MG owner.

...and Jon, this is ALL in jest. We ain't THAT picky where LBC's are concerned... I'll even admit to wrenching on many TR's. From ~new~ GT-6's to wedgies with V-8's and those bass-ackwards Saab engines. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
The MGB really does not have many idiosyncrasies....slower in a straight line than the TRs that you have had, you will find that it is a more comfortable and civilised ride. The earlier cars were quicker, by virtue of being free of the emissions junk, and also a lot lighter than the rubber-bumper equipped cars that came in the 1974 1/2 model change. I have had a few 'B's, and have found them to be fun, reliable cars to drive.

Let us know which era of the MGB you are considering, and we will weigh in with comments and advice. I believe that the "best" year was 1967. Five-bearing engine, no emissions equipment to speak of, chrome bumpers, and the original crackle-finish dash.

Well not any MGB owner sad stories yet but how about a shopping for an MGB horror story. I am a gunsmith so that leaves me with a few firearms to trade on. A local gentleman new about my firearms collection and offered a trade for part of my collection for his 78 MGB. So far so good. After looking through my collection he picked several items he liked. At this point we went to his place to check out the "B". Nice looking car at first glance, what one would term a 10 footer. However a quick look underneath revealed the true horror that only some bondo and cheap paint can conceal. The drivers floor board from the footwell to back of the drivers seat was rotted away. In its place was what appeared to be part of a road sign. Further inspection also reavealed that I could stick my finger through the center cross member on the drivers side. All I can say about the situation was, "a day wasted." Oh yeah, my gun collection is still in the safe. They don't eat anything and I don't have to clean up after them. That leaves me still looking. I just hope my luck is better next time. I have an "B" hunt scheduled for this weekend. Wish me luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

I love it! Just had somebody try to reverse it on me. "I've read your article so you can't cheat me." So, if people think I'm trying to 'cheat' them, why help them?& what's funny is, from what I had seen of his car to that point, I was willing to pay his asking price. Didn't. walked. He still has the car but I'll never go back.

Hehe...bloody good point, Tony...I can see why there's a line between helping fellow enthusiasts, but not to the point of "doin' meself out of a fiver, guvna!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I reckon if your info helps people have a realistic idea of the value of their cars, it would help to reduce unrealistic expectations and diasappointments from both the buyers and sellers.

As it is, for safe keeping (like the recently deceased MG electrical site) I have to admit to PDF-ing your doco...for personal use only - promise!

Tony in all seriousness, I think you could sell some of these to the mags or even write a book with lots of your stories along with your practical wisdom.
