MGB MGB MPG....What do you get?

Just curious to hear what others are getting for fuel economy in their B's.

I've gone through a whole tank of super unleaded and just prior to filling it reset my odometer.

I'm nearly dry now and have 125 miles on the odometer.

1972 MGB with 32/36 Weber DGV and a Performance Cam.

I know that camshaft is not helping on the economy but it sure helps on accelaration /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

That would put my car around 10 mpg which doesn't seem all that good. Though most of that is around town driving and hardly any open road touring.

and on a last note, whats the best one could expect on the highway?

I would check it at the next fill up. Ten mpg isn't very good. SCCA race cars probably do better than that.

Can not be, gesh.

I know my car has been off the road for a while, but I was pretty good at keeping a log of the mileage. I just did some quick calculations, and I was getting an average (10 tanks) of 29MPG.

The engine was stock at that time, stock cam, and HS4 carbs. The only thing that was different was a Crane XR-700 ignition.

3500 miles on a rebuilt engine with a 270 cam and weber 38 outlaw getting 26mpg at 75mph and 28mpg at 70mph or below. In the mountians under heavy flogging 19mpg. 4speed no overdrive.

Dizzy cap, roter, wires, points, condencer, plugs, adjust valves, tune carbs, balance carbs, brakes not too tight, clutch not slipping. Well you get the idea.

Depends on engine setup as well. The more performance you pull from the engine, the less fuel economy you will typically get.

I never worry about it; however 10mpg is bad! Sounds like time for a tuneup.

worst 16MPG; best 25MPG... Stock 1976 MGB with Zenith-Stromberg carb.

Something's wrong somewhere. Do an electrical and valve adjust tune first. Then look at your jetting on the Weber and let us know what it is. Probably way too large idle fuel and main fuel, or too small main air.

Teglerizer used to have good Weber info on his site. Do a google for Teglerizer or Weber DGV carburetors.

I think I may have calculated it all wrong for the mileage. I'll do a few more full tanks to empty then re-calculate.

Everything on this engine is brand new (just turned 1,100 miles)

all the various suggestions have been done on this car short of putting the exhaust through a smog machine for analysis.

Car runs fantastically. I've never ever experienced so much power "pull" from a B before and I've owned 3 previously.

I went to Steve_S's Memorial Day Malibu Drive today. It was the first really good test run I've done with my B since I added the electric radiator fan, stock fuel pump, and swapped the stock Z-S carb for a HS6.

I filled my tank this morning before I set out. I made it back home with the fuel gauge reading 1/2 tank, and the trip odometer reading 162 miles. This is looking to be the best fuel economy I've ever had with my MGB.

I'll have to report back in a day or two after I refill the tank with my final avg MPG for this current tank of gas.

By ded reckoning that's in the high 20's! You ~sure~ the thing ain't leaned out too far?!? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Nope. Runs great, plugs look great, etc.

The Miata Forum folks used to say I lied when I said I often get 32mph in the Miata too. Generally they say 26-28 is "normal". I aim for 30, 28 is bad for me. Must be the driving style.

When we went to Gatlinburg last year for the MG thing, our '73 with overdrive got 34! I was amazed. Checked it a couple of times to be sure, and even checked the odometer against the interstate mile markers.

Wonder what the TR8 will get after break-in? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif
