How do you identify what year a MGB gearbox is from? The two I have are stamped on the side and not near the dip stick as mentioned in tech books. Thank you.

There are 4 basic MGB transmissions. The first 2 are non syncro first and they have a hole in the bell for the starter to poke thru. The size of the input shaft determines weather it was from a 3 or 5 main car. The next 2 are full syncro units. No place for the starter to poke thru. If it has a dip stick to check the oil its a chrome bumper unit from 68 to 74 and if it has a side fill plug its a 74 full rubber bumper to the end of production box. Bob

Most mga gear boxes have a course spline on the input shaft. They also have a remote shifter. Early MGA boxes have a slip in driveshaft and later ones bolt on. Part way into the MK 2 mga the trans got a fine spline input and ribs on the case. The starter holes on the late MGA is different from the MGB by about 7/16 of an inch. Bob
