Oh, and while we're at it... has anyone figured out a trick to getting that steel ring seated squarely in the Caliper? I invariable end up bending the blasted thing or it pops out when I tap tap tap to get it started. I always buy an extra kit just for those stupid steel rings.

No trick that I know - just patience. Only trick that I know is don't remove it if it looks useable.

Them steel clips are th' same as circlips. Slime 'em up with glycerine or silicone and they almost find their "home" by themselves!
 
Well, today I get to challenge the circlips holding the rear wheel cylinders in place when I put new cylinder on the '74-1/2....my trick is to remove the backing plate from the car with brakes intact & build the rear brakes on my bench...then replace them intact.....I can get to that little sucker much easier that way.
