I recently swapped rear axles on a BGT, tube type, and decided to try Royal Purple gear lube. I took the car out a couple of times on short trips to verify that there weren't any problems and noticed a leak. It was a simple matter of re-torquing a bolt and the problem was solved. While doing this I happened to place my hand on the diff case and found that the case was really pretty hot to the touch. Over the years I never really noticed what the diff temperature might be. Is it normal for the differential to run somewhat hot? By hot I don't mean overheated radiator hot, just somewhat hot to the touch.
 
This is a new one to me. I'd love to hear the answer from the pros on this.
 
Lots and lots of friction in there. It will definitely get warm. Royal Purple is good stuff. I use it in some of my cars.
 
Don't know the answer but I'm with Steve on this one....90wt differential oil turning over pretty fast for long periods will heat up to the touch.

To the extent that some race cars used differential cooloers - look like small oil coolres with pumps for circulation.
