MGB MGB Chrome trim strip installation... need advice!

Hi. I have some of the Roadster Factory's best BMH trim strips, but need advice on installing them... I've used their installation kit and have riveted the "cups" into the old mounting holes, leaving a single large hole at each panel for the screw-in brackets. However, when I try to slide the trim strip in order to feed the first cup into the widened part of the mounting slot, the cup just won't slide into the trim. I don't want to force it and either scratch my new paint job, or bend the strip. I tried a little paste wax to lubricate the slot in the back of the trim, but no luck. Is there some kind of technique that has worked for anyone out there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Parker
 
Parker - Don't know if this is the correct procedure, but I would get the strip in the correct position, hook the lower side of the trim under the cup, the press the upper side down until it snapped over the upper side of the cup. Then went to the next cup and repeated. Sometimes I got lucky and could get the trim to snap ove two cups at a time.

I agree with Dave on mounting the side strips. My wife mounted the strips on her car using that exact method. Actually, she also riveted the buttons in place prior to. After lining up the threaded ends to their proper holes, hook the strip under a button, then with a slight upper lift, push on the strip to snap in place. We encountered no paint damage in the process. PJ





 
Thanks, both of you! I guess I probably just assumed that the "sliding technique" was the way to go since that's how I'd removed the old ones. Your method sounds like it would be better for the new paint job. Thanks again, Parker
 
Yup. They are meant to snap over the cups. the only "slider" is the threaded fasteners.

Paul, just read your post to replace chrome strips. i have a 77 midget and the former owner painted it poorly and the trim has paint lines all over it, so I want to remove and replace the trim strips. How do I get them off?

Guy, if you want to save the paint the best thing you can use is a trim tool which is made of a tough plastic. You can get them in kit form with various tools and their not very expensive. I would open one end, lift it enough to get a trim tool on one side and gently slide the tool under the edge lifting it enough to pop it off each individual snap. Use a shop rag to drape over the loose trim as you go along so it doesn't mar the painted surface. Hope this helps. PJ
 
If it's what I think your talking about, the slight curve is at the fender front.

Only ones with an "angle" on the ends are the rear strips. The angle follows the tail-light angle. The front strips have a slight bow toward the front to accommodate the front wing curve but the ends are both at 90° to the length, headlamp and door opening.
