MGB-GT MGB/C GT Fender Differences

Side marker lights or no side marker lights or reflectors ('69 only), location of park lights (closer to grill or farther from grille)

Can you tell me which style my 1969 MGC GT should have? It should have the earlier fender correct?

I wonder if the MGC 1:18 scale models have it right?
These claim to be scale models of the 1969 MGC-GT.

I believe my 69 MGC-GT does not have the reflectors.
The park lights look to be about 1 inch from the grille.
I can double check tonight, mine is a 1969 MGC-GT 4 speed OD.

This is so confusing, I wish the very DPO hadn't thrown the original fenders away!!!

You can see where there are rear reflectors on both sides:

If the die cast 1:18th scale model folks have it right the 1969 MGB-GT fender is the same as the C model:

Here is a very ugly picture of my 1969 MGC GT rear.
See the reflector there?

(I thought we were talking about front fenders)

So the fenders should be broken down as 65-69 GT and 70-74 GT instead of 65-68 GT and 69-74 GT?

I am talking about front fenders, I figured since there was a reflector in the rear there would be one in the front also like this:

This is my January build 1970 MGB-GT. I believe this car to be pretty much original, there's a clear path of ownership and paperwork.
See the reflectors on front and rear?
Note the different styles of reflectors, the later being bullet shaped and the earlier being simple rectagons.

So the 1969 GT has small reflectors front and rear and the 1970 GT has larger reflectors located where the later side marker lights go...?

Sorry, I don't think I was being very clear before.
Let me try again.

The 70 has reflectors & side lights that form a bullet shape on the side front & rear.

The 69 has the rectangular reflectors, each just behind the wheel.

(I did find a pic of the front of my car that has the amber color reflector there)

The only difference that can't be changed is the location of the signal lamp. The rest is just holes for reflectors or side marker lamps, which depend on the year. Mark I fenders have signal lamp assemblies 1-inch farther from the grill than Mark II models.

1969 has reflectors...'68 & earlier had nothing....'70 & later had side marker lights

Depending on when your '69 was built, it might have parking lights close to the grill (late '69 til '80) or farther out from the grille ('62 til early '69)

Wow, so given I do not have the original fenders can I look up which style my car should be by the VIN? I haven't seen a very good break down of MGC VINs by date manufactured like there is on other cars.

I've got 2 '69 MGB GT parts cars....the July car has the later fenders, the Jan car has the earlier if that helps.

Look in the back of Clausingers to see by VIN & date when the fenders changed.

But, you might as well go aheads & get the later fenders - the early ones are made from unobtainable....only reason I've not crushed those '69's yet is parts of the fenders can be combined to make a set of early ones.

On my MGC Tourer, the front turn signal on one side is close to the grill and on the other side it is farther out from the grill -- no side reflectors of any kind on the fenders.

She was built in September of 1968. My theory has always been that they were switching over between MkI and MkII fenders, and she got one of each. Perhaps not possible, but I *like* that better than just having a replacement fender from a later date. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but a PO changed one of your fenders - probably the one that has the parking light closer to the grille....have you looked up inside to see if there's any evidence they might also have closed up a side marker light hole?

Hi Tony,

I figured as much, but it doesn't really bother me. The curious thing is, though, that I have indeed checked to see if holes for side markers were closed up, and there are none. Just nice clean sheet metal. Well, sheet metal, anyway! She needs a bath.
