Was hanging a couple lights out in the shop recently and couldn't resist taking this picture. I'm not afraid of heights, but the bottom of the trusses are 15.5' above the concrete. I'm a big guy, I'd make quite the splat...

The flexing about half way up was the worst part. Move thoughtfully and not a big deal, nice to have some light out there finally.

A lift is indeed in the plans, maybe next year if the finances allow. Need to get the loft built first, so I can finish up the electrical and insulation. Then lift (unless I get impatient and just get it first :grin: ).

Going to go 4-post as of right now. All lift types have pluses/minuses, and as I've looked through the options the 4-post works best for me. Mostly I just want to get the cars up a bit so I can work on them without bending over so much, and 4-post is the easiest for that. A bridge jack or similar for when working on suspension. Plus, you can park a car on it if you run out of space...

Shop floor is 5" rebar-reenforced concrete, so it's plenty strong enough.

I'd kill for that ceiling height. Demo starts on my garage/house tomorrow so I can put a storage lift in. Knocking out all the joists in the garage and replacing with steel beams. to support the roof. Going with a single post lift as I have to do a sharp 90 degree turn into my garage and a 4 poster would make things hard. Really need the storage lift now as in the midst of all this I ended up buying a 73 volvo 1800es

Good luck with the construction -- and with the Volvo.

My main goal with this shop was to avoid going too small. My last shop was 12x20 with an 8' ceilling. Didn't want to make that mistake again. It's one advantage of building from scratch. Height is cheap compared to floor space, so we went up.

I've worked with those spaces too... my wife's one comment on this shop build when we were looking to move was to not build it too small (as I did with my last one, which was 12x20). So I made sure it was not too small -- I think I did okay. :grin:

Finally have some ceiling height in mine and the volvo project went totally sideways due to rust. Also I found the absolute cure for heavy steering in an mgb. Go drive an old volvo for an hour and you will never complain about steering in a mgb again.

Love that P1800 though! Through one of the other forums I frequent, I met a guy who is building a Molvo. 1800 wagon on a Miata suspension with a Mustang V8 - He is in London ON and the quality of work is staggering.

Yep you are looking at the new digs, very short commute to work now, like 20 feet I sold the old shop a year ago, the hood got trendy , and they made me offer I could not refuse. The old shop now is a trendy gourmet coffee shop/bar/bicycle repair shop, yeah I know, a silly business idea, but it's their building now, and I have the new and improved Acme Speed Shop, minus the crackheads, It's good to be out of the hood, LOL
