MGA MGA tires

I know this has probably been discussed endlessly but I'm going to ask it anyway. What size tires are people running on stock MGA disk wheels? The car has original bias ply tires on it that are in good shape but have gotten very hard over the years. Needless to say this does not make for a very comfortable ride and the handling just plain sucks. Just looking for a modern tire size that will look good on the car but not break the bank getting them.

Those tires may look safe, but at that age they are probably an accident waiting to happen.

+1 on the Kumhos being a decent choice.

Good luck trying to find a size. I was playing around on the Kumho site but can't find a skinny 15" er

Thats what I'm running into. Finding a 165/15 is proving to be rather difficult. Kind of surprising with how many cars are still out there that use that size. A lot of the Brit cars do plus the early VW's. I know about the tires probably being unsafe which is why the car has been driven very sparingly and there has always been a tow vehicle around. Just be nice to be able to take this car on some trips and not have to worry.

Howdy BRS,

I was just passing thru & I may(?)have your answer(?)!!

I`m doing a `57TR3 Body Off Resto. I came across the same problem & contacted a "Wheel / Tire" supplier here locally in NW SC. I bought a set of 5 of those "NanKang 165R15" for my TR3. I bought a set of tubes as well even though I have disc wheels on my car.

I have not driven on them as of yet so I don`t know how they`ll react on the road but "How bad can they be"! I`m not going to be racing & anything like that so I have believe they`ll be just fine. Again, I have them mounted on my rims and they look just "Great"!

I bought them for approx. $60.00ea!!! If you should have an interest; PM or Email myself & I`ll forward you their contact info. I don`t know if they`ll ship. "If Not"; Let me know & I`ll pick them up & ship them to yourself.

Best Wishes,

Russ

I'm with Steve if that company has that tire

It is impossible to find any kind of performace compound in an original size tire.

If you go a bit wider (5" or 5.5") you can fit 185x65-15. These are only 1.1% fast (i.e. they are 0.2" lower) than the 165x75-15, which is as close to the original 165 x 80 as was available for a long time (they are 3% off those)

Ok Just ordered some tires for the car. Next question. Can disk wheels be run tubeless or should I put tubes in? The car will be driven but won't have any real thrashing done.

They don't have safety beads, so technically you're not supposed to run tubeless. That said, many people have run older rims without safety beads with tubeless tires. The purpose of the safety beads is to prevent the tire from coming off the rim if it completely deflates.
