Well, I've honed and honed and the clutch cylinder on my 1956 MGA still leaks. The bore feels smooth, but obviously there is some irregularity that's allowing brake fluid around the new piston rubber. Anyone know of a reliable re-sleeving service or have advice on how to go about a re-sleeve. It's not as simple as finding a thin walled brass tube and fitting it in, is it???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Honing it opens the bore a bit too.... Can you buy a replacement? May not be the original metal box one, but one that works will be better for a driven car, and better for the paint under the hood. You want to drive it, or trailer it to the shows?

Just my 2¢ worth.

Maybe you can get a few originals and bench-rebuild them until you find one that doesn't leak while the plastic reservior one actually works so you can drive the fabulous car?
 
Yup. Probably it's been honed a little too much, and now the bore is too large for the seals.
I would reccomend re-sleeving. Not something that can be done at home. Either find a local machine shop that can do it, or try someone like Apple Hydraulics.

BTW Banjo, (not to steal the thread "much"), I plan to start tearing down the Yota this thursday (finally). I'll appreciate any help (thanks for the help you've given me so far too!) you can write to me. Thanks Gents for the advice. Unfortunately the early A's have a solid block of cast steel that has both the brake and clutch master cylinders bored into it. Moss has a "new" replacement for $400+ and I figgered that $400 would be worth a careful honing. You're undoubtedly right about the bore being too large. I'll need to get an inside mike and check the diameter! One never knows the history of a garage find, eh?? Didn't think about the local machine shop. The folks at Rod's Automotive did a bang up job on the block and head(and cheap!). The body is off the chassis, so it won't be any problem to pull the master cylinder. It's been a blast driving the chassis around the neighborhood, sort of like a giant go-kart!! As far as sleeving the cylinder, I'll google Apple Hydraulics and see what's up...Thanks again!

Hey Jlaird! Thanks very much for the links. I like the prices at Apple Hydraulics! They're less than 1/2 price for a remanufactured master cylinder.
Good luck on the bugeye project...I'm beginning to think that all our garages sort of look the same...
