MGA MGA Floor board screws- Question

I am in the process of doing a complete ground up on a 62 MKII. I am putting on the new floor boards that I cut out of marine grade plywood.

There are two sizes of screws that came in the kit. 1" and 1 1/4" I assume the 1 1/4" screws are longer so they have space underneath the car to put on a clip with a nut to hold a brake line? Wiring? or gas line? Not sure.

Does anyone know where these longer screws go as compared to the short ones and what additionaly they may be used for?

Is there a book available that would have special tips like this?

Thanks for your help
John

John,

It has been many years, but aren't there only 6 or 8 long screws in the set and all the rest are the shorter size (1")? If so, I think I remember that the floor is attached to the chassis with all of those shorter screws and the longer ones are for the brake line clips (4 or 5) and the fuel line clips (2 or 3).

The book "Original MGA: The Restorer's Guide" has just been republished. This is a great book for telling you what was original to each MGA model.

I am restoring a 1500 MGA Coupe, and I noted most all of the screw lengths when I dismantled my car. There are three 1 1/4 inch long screws used in attaching the floor boards. Actually these 3 screws are used in the toe boards. One of these is used on the left hand upper outboard corner and another one is used on the right hand (opposite) upper outboard corner. The third long screw should be used next to the starter motor cutout. The reason for its length is because it doubles as a mounting point for a speedometer cable clip in the engine compartment.
There are also two 3/4 inch long screws used. So, you can cut a couple of the one inch long screws to the correct length. One of the 3/4 inch long screws is used in mounting the transmission cover to the toe board. It is the very top centered screw. The reason it is short is because it does not need to go through the thickness of the wood. The other 3/4 inch long screw is used in the left hand forward floor board. Unfortunately I don't know its exact location because I ended up drilling a number of screws in that area when removing my floor boards. I figure that the reason will be obvious when I reassemble the car.
The rest of the screws are 1 inch long. However, on the heel board, the top right hand screw also doubles as a ground point for the fuel pump using a 1/4-28 nut and lock washer. On the heel board, the lower right hand screw doubles as a mounting point for the battery lead clip, which uses a 1/4-28 half nut. I hope this information gives you some help. If you need more information, holler.

Thank you for the ideas. When I pulled my floor boards off, those that were left, I would not have imagined trying to note if any of those screws where longer.

I originally through it was possibly for the brake or gas line along the passenger side board but the wiring harness is attached to the frame with clips welded on and I think the gas, brake line clips are screwed directly to the bottom of the floor board. It did not appear to have enough room for a clip were the screw came through.

Thanks
John
