MGA MGA car numbers

If the information you want isn't in "Original MGA" by Andres Clausager then I'd try the Heritage Motor Centre https://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/
You should be able to apply for a heritage certificate for your car which would give you all the information as to the date of manufacture and the original equipment.

Post them here & I'll decipher.

H - MGA
M - Coupe
R - Old English White
4 - LHD, North American export
3 - Cellulose (lacquer paint)
****7 - should not be there
35662 - Car number

1st MGA built in 1957 was 24609
1st MGA built in 1958 was 45411

So, 35662 is square in the middle of 1957.

Check your number for that "7" - is it the "/" possibly?

Thanks Tony....and the seven is actually a /....I've been ordering parts from all over, have finished most of my customers cars and the A is almost at the head of the line.

My 1960 MGA has registration number: GHNL80304
Looks like is is a late 1959 roadster but which number is the paint code?
I may paint it original, depending on what colour it is.
Also- which is the list that you are getting your info from?

Bill

GHNL80304 isn't an MGA number - its an MGB number!

Oh great!! Now I need to figure out what the number really is and then try to get our DOL to change the papers? Or maybe I'll just let it ride and have the only MGB around with swoopy fenders!!

Thanks Tony
Bill

Oh, that's the VIN for a 1966 MGB!! Here ya go:

MGB codes start with 'GHN' which collectively mean 'MGB roadster'.

& here they are individually:

G = MG
H = 1400cc to 2000cc engine
N = 2-seater tourer
L = Left hand drive pre-1967
80304 = 1966, probably around February

You need to figure out what the MGA numbers are because if you don't, that MGA just became valueless - & not as in "mucho dinero" but as in "nada"! In other words: WORTHLESS to a collector! & if its a coupe, well.......

So, if you can't find the original VIN, you need to find a '60 MGA data plate!

Also 1600's did not have a paint code listed on the serial number plate like a 1500 did. Just have to get a heritage certificate or look under the dash! . bob

I just pulled off the tail light plinths from my 1500 and found a perfectly preserved sample of the original Glacier Blue paint inside. Too bad my wife has her heart set on red.

Thanks Bob
I didn't know about that very subtle difference but I am glad that it is there.
Now my MGA can be an MGA.
Bill

Well, if its a 1600 - then, its for sure not a '59..........I stand corrected & will go to my room without dinner.
