MG Tires

That's a good size for it. I like Kumho's.
 
Sumitomo HTR 200 185/70-14 on rostyles. That wide a tire is definitely pushing (beyond?) the safety envelope on the narrower wire wheels.
 
I use Vredestein Quadtrac 2s. 165/60R14s. They have a great ride, great on wet roads and corner very well. The Quadtracs are not period looking tires, the sprints are. My 72 rides 100% better since installing these tires. Not cheap at around $100.00 each. No speedo adjustments had to be made either. I love them! PJ

That just doesn't seem possible. 165/60-14s are 9% smaller in diameter than stock 155/80-14s and 11% smaller than the stock optional 165/80-14. I certainly wouldn't put that small a tire on the car...it already runs at annoyingly high revs and this would make it way worse.

I don't know where your getting your information. The car originally came with 155/60/14s, these 165/60/14s are larger in diameter than the originals. Maybe the Dutch measure their tires differently?? I ordered these tires and they were shipped directly to me from the factory in Holland. I'll guarantee that these tires are larger than 155/14s, the original tires. I still have the originals on wires in the back of the shop and their 155/60s <span style="font-weight: bold">not 80s</span>. If it wasn't so much trouble to dig them out, I'd take a photo of them together. But, to each his own. I love these tires, along with the 30 MPG I get since installing them. (It got 26 before)!

I just thought I'd add;
155/60/14s circumference is 67.0 inches and turns 946 revs per mile.
165/60/14s circumference is 68.5 inches and turns 925 revs per mile. Think about it!
 
Sorry but you're wrong. The MGB came with 155-14s and the GT with 165-14s. This is listed in the owners manual that came with my car. Back then all standard metric measurement tires were approximately 80 aspect ratio so they didn't label the "80" on the tire. In the late 70s they switched to lower profile 185/70-14s which retain the exact same diameter as the 165-14s. There's no way that 60 series tires were ever used as stock tires, in fact I don't think 60 series street tires were even made in the 60s and early 70s (though that is just personal recollection).

Yor right on the 155/14s! I just looked at one of the original tires. it was in the trunk and never on the ground. I'm the second owner of the car, but knew this car when it was new, so I know the spare was never used. Say what you want, but my new tires are taller by 1/4 inch than the original. Oh well, I'll say no more. I know what I now know and you know what you know, so let's just leave it at that and move on. Happy trails!

I have learned to never argue about how large a tire really is unless I put a ruler on the actual tire. The numbers are just a rough guide within the same brand and style of tire. I have measured many tires and find that the same numerical size may vary by as much as a inch between brands. there will also be variation within the same brand as you go from one tread style to another.
The rim diameter (14, 15, etc) are pretty firm, but the width and ratio are open to interpretation by the factory. I know a factory rep or salesman will say otherwise but the ruler (really a large caliper is better) will tell the story.
Many companies catalogs or web sites list the actual inflated dimensions. that is a much more reliable method for picking tires. If you are going too extreme, the only way is to put them on and see what rubs.
 
The only reason I can figure why my new tires are slightly larger in diameter, (by a 1/4 of an inch), is that they are all weather tires and appear to have a thicker tread design. They are a soft compound and super on a wet road. ???
 
Years ago I bought Michelin ZXZ tires to replace the Firestone OEM tires on my wife's Honda Accord. Even though they were the "same size", the Michelins were definitely smaller and narrower.
