T-Series MG TF, TD dashes

Well I had luck uploading the pics....so here you go....the first one is the original style dash, in vinyl...note that the grab handle on the left is optional...
The second pic is of the dash that was in my car before i removed it...as you can see someone has really done a number on it.

Also could you post(or send me) a pic of one of your completed dashes, I'd love to see one.

Trust me, I am to old for this computer stuff. I have sent you pics to your regular e-mail. Let me know if you do not recieve it. I will try to figure out how to post the pics on this discussion. Thanks

Here's a picture of how I got mine. I've fixed it up a bit but the center and lamp bases are still red. That's the next project. I found an original restored Tach, Jaeger H20 temp gauge, 30MPH lamp, Fuel Warning lamp, Inspection Sockets, Headlamp/Ignition switch and bought a repro grab handle. Still looking for an original Speedo and need to restore the Oil Pressure Gauge and Ammeter.

I want to upgrade to a polished wood.

That's like upgrading from color television to black and white! But as the old saying goes... real British sports cars have wooden dash panels! That said, my only British car with a wood dash is not a sports car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Steve S.,
I am pretty new to this stuff and I build great dashes, but as I mentioned, this computer thing is new to me. I cannot see your pics and if you would, send them to my e-mail address at gaston_blanc@comcast.net. I would love to see it. Gaston

Can't see the pic either steve.....
Gaston...my concern is the recess for the guages...Unfortunatly I don't think it will be possible to get right without a proper, original template.

I would be glad to help any way I can. There is a front recess (1/8 inch rabbet)for triumphs. A rear rabbet for Sunbeams. If someone could help us with this we could get this done. I will try to reserch this. This is for a TC?

Steve,
The car is beautiful, absolutely!. I do agree however that a wood dash will really ad to the car. My wife has a S-Type Jag that has a beautiful birds eye maple dash, wheel, ect., great car, but it is still not a sports car. Your dash would be awsome with a curly maple or a walnut burl with a hand rubbed french polish finish. A walnut burl with perhaps a birds eye maple center section.........Gaston

My TC is a '49 home market model. It came with a black vinyl-covered dash as new so I plan to keep it that way. However the red is not original and will be changed soon! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thats what I've been looking for, for my TC....I guess my last resort is MOSS....any word on their quality??

Steve, one question; my TC has a oil pressure/water temp split guage....is this original or should it be seperate?

That is not original but it is a practical modification. Originally the two gauges in the center section were amps and oil pressure. A common modification at the time was to install a temp gauge on the right of the tach. I'll take a photo of mine and post it later.

This might be a silly question but if the temp/oil are seperate then where does the extra guage go? I was looking at the pics posted and my centre cluster is ther same as yours and the other car I posted....I don't see any additional guages?

or did it not have a temp guage originally?

There was no temp gauge from the factory. Most people drilled a hole to the right of the tach and installed a gauge there.

In case you don't have one, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of Mike Sherrell's "TCs Forever". It is the holy bible of TC restoration. There are numerous color photos showing many aspects of originality including the different year model dash panels.

I got mine here (note price is in AUS, not USD): https://www.pitstop.net.au/pitstop/page/marques_mg_up_to_t_series/2456.html

I do have a copy(signed actually) of TC's Forever....although it is very good I still find myself consulting the MOSS catalogue and TC shop manual more often...It didn't really cross my mind to check the book regarding the guages.
Anyway thanks for clearing that up....If I get my split guage restored I guess I'll use that(it's an exact match to the original guages, but if I remember correctly the bulb on the end is broken). I'd hate to drill an extra hole in the new wood dash when I get one.

Here are a couple photos of my dash. I have not yet installed all the proper goodies that I've scavenged so don't base originality off of it! The first photo is the dash layout. You can see the water temp gauge on the right. THe second photo is of the temp gauge. This is an authentic period Jaeger gauge, correct for any TC as an accessory.
