Final disassembly tonight - body man coming over tomorrow night..does anybody have suggestions for removing brass VIN/data labels on the tool box up under the bonnet? I want to keep the rivets as they are different than those we get nowadays...

you want to save the rivets?....could be tuff....can you get to the backsides of them?..
if so gently try to restretch them out.
if not could your local machine shop make some for you...hmmmm that is a challenge.. are they round headed? or like a standard rivet?

round both front & back...they're on the top & front of the wooden tool box & they're round on the backside also...look sorta like they were put in with some type of hand riveting tool, not cut with new type tool
 
Aloha Tony,

Brass is very malleable and you should be able to squeeze and stretch one side to the point it can be removed. A large nail set or a similar tool with a concave head could be used to reset them. Another option is to get some solid brass brads or brass rod from a hobby shop and fabricate new ones. God luck.

On my 51 the three brass plates are on with small screws. What pictures of original details seem to be screws.

Brass screws? Guess I need to start looking under the hoods of TD's! Not to steal them but to get a pretty good notion of which way to go....screws or hand pressed rivets

Henri....Its a '53 round rear taillight....this afternoon the body man is coming to my place to pronounce it ready for his shop or to show me what else he wants disassembled...all new wood in body, mechanics completely gone through, new leather, dash redone & instruments as well.....all she really neds is stripping & paint...&, right now, she's stripped down further than the photo below

Tony,

If you know a place that makes or repairs old clocks, they would likely have brass rivits close to what you need. An good antique shop may also have some old time solid rivits, but would likely requred you to bring the parts to them for installation. It was almost 30 years ago that I helped a buddy restore a '52 TD when we got such hardware from the local shop that is now long gone, but I bet there are some more like it somewhere...good luck!

Bruce...thanks for the tip...I'd never thought of it...I'm going to a club meeting tonight & a friend will have his beautifully & historically correct TD there...will follow his lead...if he has brass screws gonna find that clock shop...if rivets, gonna drill one of mine out & see where I can find others (drilling out will also allow me to see if they're in factory holes)...I tried last night to remove one of the rivets while saving it - no luck!
 
Rivets it is...painter was over this afternoon...said every TD he's done has rivets...he has them & knows how to do them with a hammer & dowle thingee....said not to worry..now, I've gotta take a few tiny things off the car, find headlight brackets in a box & get her on trailer to him end of week....
 
Actually, Tom...TD grill fins were the same color as the interior...&, they were never chromed!
