T-Series MG-TD wood replacement

I have a 51 MG-TD that I'm trying to change the timbers on. Some of them are completely rotted out. The body is off the frame. Does anyone have any tips on an easy way to do this? I would also like to get the rust off all of the inside of the metal panels. Should I coat/paint the new wood timbers? With what? I know that someone knows the best way to replace them and lessions learned.

P.S. I have the rebuild 1800 engine/trans mounted in the frame and the MGB rearend installed. I'm using the TD radiator. I put 72 MGB disk breaks on the front.

Barry - The best place to get answers to your questions is on the T Series TD-TF BBS on the MG Cars Enthusiasts club web site at: https://www.mgcars.org.uk/index.html You will find Bulletin Boards at the top of the right hand column on the menu page, click on that, then scroll down to T Series TD TF. When I replaced the main wood rails in the tub on our TD, I got everything fitted, trimmed and drilled, then soaked each piece for a week in Wood Life preservative, let them dry, then soaked them in Thompson's Water Seal. That was over 25 years ago and even though the car is driven in all kinds of weather, I have not had any problem from the wood at all.

I can understand one restoration, two maybe, but when we get to number three, we have hit the slippery slope to obsessive....

I don't buy restoration projects though. I buy drivers. Some people love tinkering with cars more than anything. I prefer to spend as much time behind the wheel as possible. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I balanced my obsession by buying one project car (the '57 A) and one driver (the '66 B).

Only problem is, like you, I gotta be driving an LBC so my little B just gets driven while the A gets all of the attention. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

The B is getting impatient to be restored so is starting to fall apart... I'll restore it once the A is on the road or finished, whichever comes first... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

The AH 100-6 is my business partner's, is a project car and I am restoring it with him so doesn't count.

I like to work on them to keep my hands busy but not much to do on the GT. The TD needs work but I have to find a solid chunk of time. Both can be daily drivers but I rather use them up sapringly.
Next project I'll get as a daily driver and use it as much as I can.
