T-Series MG TD Running Board

So, we're in the process of prefitting all the body panels on my TD...now, here's the question:

Looking at the Moss diagram below, my question surrounds items #14 & #15...my car has all new wood in the body &, it appears, also has new quarter panels (#15) as there are no holes - nor never were - for the running boards (#14) to mount to the body panel; however, on the back side of the running boards, there are 3 flanges that bolts go through to mate them to the body panel.

Can somebody slide up under their TD & look to see if there are, in fact, 3 bolts holding the running board to the body panel (that's in addition to the bolts holding the running boards to the fenders themselves)?

And, can somebody back one of those bolts out to tell me to what it threads in the body?

I'm real afraid there should be some type threaded insert in the wood itself but don't want to start drilling holes in pristine metal without some advance knowledge.

They are basically long bolts nuts & lockwashers that hold it to the body. You will need to drill through the metal & wood. Running board are held to rear fender with rubber spacers to allow water run off at back of runner. The front fender is held onto the running board - nuts, bolts & lock washers. The fender is held into front quarter with small phillips head screws but then bolts at other locations.

...hmmmm, never thought about going all way through wood! There aren't any long bolts in the fender bolt kit - but I do have a bunch of new long bolts that came separately that must be them.

I have the rubber pads that go between the front fenders & the running boards but need to get the bushings that go between the running board & rear fenders....another dilema solved before I knew it!

Here is one of the grommet from Running board to rear fender. It is a small rubber ring.

Here is one of the front fender to running board. It is more of a rubber strip that overlaps each body panel a bit.

Keep in mind all these bits are 55 years old and counting. Don't forget your piping when you install for good.
 
I'm gonna want to pick your brain when we do the piping later on....right now, its just fit everything up, take photos, & disassemble for paint....all panels will be painted off car & then car assembled again.
 
Tony - When I put our TD together (some 25 years ago), I made over sized holes in the piping so there was some wiggle room in aligning it. Some people cut slots so the piping can be slid down over the bolts after the fenders are in place. If you have Horst Schach's book, The Complete MG TD Restortion Manual, he has a really goo way of treating the ends of the piping to make it look more finished. If you haven't got the book, it s available through Brit Books at: https://www.britbooks.com/index.htm It is well worth the price.

David - we've got a copy of the book in the car at the body shop along with tons of photos we've taken off the internet...I'll be taking these photos down to the shop Monday.
 
That is a great book and I remember that article very well. I had Horst's email address but can't locate it right now. I spoke with him online several times and he sent me the book directly.
