T-Series MG TD fender question

I have a buddy who just picked up a TD that is need of some metal work. In looking at the rear fenders there is a band of flat steel stitch welded onto the inner section of the beaded wheel well opening for extra support. I'd like to know if ths is as factory or if it may have been added?

The car is rather nice and had a costly restoration at one point but he has found some small things that will need to be changed back to OE to get it up to standard. Which is part of the reason I'm questioning the supports.

Thanks for any insight.

Thanks guys it's greatly appreciated. I contacted a buddy who is currently restoring one, he said his has them on the front and not the rear while this one is the opposite. I'll put them back in after the repairs, I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks again
