T-Series MG TD 1st/2nd sliding hub end play

Can anyone help. I just dismantled the transmission on my 1952 MG TD (was noisy) and looks that someone recently (prior owner) had it rebuild. Everything looks great, but I see too much end play between the 1st/2nd sliding hub end play to the circlip on the main shaft. I can move the hub about 3 mm. I could not find what should be the maximum end play in the factory shop manual or in videos, but 3 mm appears too much. What could be wrong? The wrong main shaft or sliding hub? I can only asume the floating hub may be making the noise in all gears but in fourth.
