I could see that coming for a while since they had no hope of developing new product. Only a question of time. Still very sad - would have been great for them to develop a new generation of cars.
 
Yes it is sad,but I agree it never looked that promising. I wonder if the government would have helped.
I recall when Aston Martin were in difficulties there was no help available,but they just kept going and look at them now. Mind you I don't suppose this will have helped Blair's election prospects.

Aston Martin have been declared bankrupt numerous times since their inception, it has always been private individuals who have bought them out and continued the name. They have been a roller coaster from day one. They got by with the skill of their craftsmen and the small artisan companies who supplied them. The large suppliers wouldn't touch them with a barge pole; the few that did, did it for the prestige and the photo opportunities.

The "look where they are now" is due entirely to Ford who have backed them since 1988 and owned them outright since 1991. With Ford they have had access to the newer technologies and components that were previously not available to them; Bosch anti-lock brakes for example. They now use Ford test facilities and proving grounds and all Aston Martin employees receive the Ford payroll and benefits. If it wasn't for this support, Astons would probably be just another company who used to make nice cars.

There are 6,000 people at Rover who stand to lose their jobs, another 18,000 in the local area who supply the company are now in danger, some of these have already closed their doors this morning. The impact on the local community cannot be discounted either, the local shops, cafes, supermarkets etc.

At the turn of the 20th century Birmingham was known as The City of a Thousand Trades; if we carry on like this, the entire country will be lucky to have a thousand trades left.

Are there any British owned firms left in the automobile business? Are TVR, Chatham or Lotus British owned firms anymore, or was this it?

BTW, got draged to Durham by my mom several years ago, fantastic place.
 
When I said no help available I should have clarified that by saying Government help.You are right,Racing Girl,when you say it is private people who have kept financing A M and I don't think anyone ever made anything out of their ownership.
There is a lovely story that David Brown was asked by someone if he could supply them with a convertible at cost.
DB replied ,"yes,of course,that will be ÂŁ1000 above list price"

AM turned their first profit EVER last year I believe.

Morgan, Caterham and Bristol are still British. Although Caterham is reportly up for sale. Any others?

Although Astonless at the moment I have owned and raced a DB5,DB2/4 MK1, DB2/4 MK111.They kept me poor but the pleasure was immense. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Steve

They are trying to save/sell parts of the Group as a going concern. It is said that the Chinese are interested in the Engine division and there has been several interested parties in obtaining the rights to the MG Brand name.

Does look pretty bleak, lots of redundancies both from Rover and Supplier Companies.

Last I heard the Chinese were being chased again because now that MG-Rover are in recievership any purchaser won't be liable for its debts or filling up the vast hole in the pension scheme. Could this all be part of a cunning plan I hear you ask? Hmmm..........
 
MG/Rover have been given a 6.5 million pound loan by the HM government to stay in business whilst they try to seal the deal.
 
And I see in the newspaper today that the receivers have pulled the plug and are sending out 5,000 pink slips this weekend. Another 1,100 workers staying around to finish the cars in progress and prepare the factories for sale. How would you like to buy a car with a build date of May 2005??? Oh, no problem, it has a 10 year factory warranty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
I get the feeling that recovery is unlikely now, based on what was just posted above and what I read yesterday in our local automotive section...

MG Rover may live on in a manner of speaking, if China ever decides to manufacture some of the designs in China under their own name. It's definitely a sad day for that country, to essentially see the final end of independent automotive manufacturing... As the paper said yesterday - "Workers at Longbridge fear thousands of jobs will go. "There are blokes walking around in shock," said Pat Wilson, 54, who has worked there for 32 years."

Only a few speciality manufacturers remain, and there aren't many of them either. Yet I read a few years ago that in the future fewer and fewer automotive companies will remain as the automotive industry consolidates, I sense a number of of historic makes may yet bite the dust in the future.
