I need to remove some rust/corrosion along the top seam of the rear fender on my '68 GT. I was told to spring open the top of the fender, pull the bead out, then clean/prep/paint the surfaces before reassembling and doing a final paint.

Reaching into the rear fender thru the back hatch, I can feel the seam along the top of the fender, but there are no rivets/bolts/screws holding the pieces together. How are they held?

Also, the bead seems to be another crevice for corrosion to start. What kind of wrath would I be subject to if I left it out? I realize the fender would be a teensie bit narrower at the top of the tail light, but it doesn't seem to be that thick. Am I missing something?

Yes, you were misinformed. The MGB rear quarter is welded together. The bead is welded between the two parts . The only fix if its got deep rust into the seam is to replace the entire quarter panel or grind it off .
 
Welded? Thanks for the info.

Maybe that's better than being bolted from the standpoint that the seam isn't flexing/gapping open. It looks like the seam is where the corrosion starts, probably from an earlier respray. So I'll have to get to bare metal, as much as I can, and then use the POR-15 type of treatments inside and out.
