so where should i start with getting the tach working?

Check connections at the coil and just drive it. Mine sticks at firts when cold till you rev it.

+1 - every time I loose my tach it's because I've bumped off the wire

If mine ever goes out, it has alway been the ground wire under the dash.

I usually just tap the glass....

hahahahahahaha did that. oh, by the way, the oil pressure gage isnt hooked up, i have an aftermarket one under the dash. just wanted to point that out beofre people started tellin me how dumb i was for runnin an engine with no oil.

The techs become intermittant as they age due to a number of issues. Poor conductivity at the various connections is one, broken solder joints due to vibration is another, the movement gets sticky.

After fighting mine for years I rebuilt the electronics. But then again, if you get used to not looking at it and shifting by ear it's win for you.

I thought you had to tap the glass on all of them.

i know tapping is required for the fuel guage. in the original tool kit i bet british layland included a small tapping hammer just for that. anybody have that part number?

That's the first thing I always do. Then if it wont work, I reach under the dash and tighten the ground. Nice thing about a MK1 is you can reach under the dash while you're driving...

update: this morning i went out and fired it up and the tach seems to have healed over night.

Healed? Heh heh heh. No, not healed. More like... waiting. Waiting for the next time.
