Fuel leak?
If everything is really running OK, but the mileage is very poor, it's probably not the converter or other things that would affect performance noticeably.
Here in the People's Republic of California, which is top-heavy with engineers and scientists, who actually try to think through problems, we try not to miss the obvious.
