Good day all, new to the MG forum but long time member of Healey forum. Could someone tell me if MGB knockoffs (octagon) are 12 TPI (threads per inch) or 8 TPI?

My AH BJ7 model came equipped with octagon knockoffs due to it being shipped to Germany and I do have 12 TPI hubs. I'm in need of LH side octagon knockoffs with 12 TPI if anyone has a good pair..

Early MGBs were 12 TPI (fine).

Later MGBs were 8 TPI (course).

I'm not sure of the exact change-over....but my 1967 MGB/GT has course thread.

New ones are available from Moss, etc.
 
Ok, since we're on the topic of knock-offs.....help me get my information right, please....I've always thought that the knock-off spinner, nut, hub (however you call it) was supposed to tighten in the direction of travel. So the spinners on the driver side (US spec car) would tighten in the counterclockwise direction and the passenger side would tighten in the clockwise direction. I found thst my MGB - US spec car - has knock-offs and it is just the opposite. The spinners marked "left side" - driver side - LOOSEN in the direction of travel, as do the spinners marked "right side" - passenger side. Please, wiser minds than mine, help me straighten this out! :crazyeyes:

Your wrong. LH left thread, RH right thread. They tighten in the opposite direction of forward travel.

I had understood it that the wisdom was that the spinner tightens in the direction of travel so that if it would ever become loose, it would self tighten and not spin completely off. Seemed logical to me all these years! :smile:
 
MGB 1962-1964 12TPI. MGB 1965-1980 8TPI. The exact changeover was early in 1965 production.

The self tightening theory works partly with the principle that all actions have an opposite. Wheel spins forward, spinner tries to move rearward.
 
But check to be sure.....my '64 MGB built in February of 1964 had 8 TPI knock offs....possibly from '68 donor car on restoration many years ago.
 
Easy way to remember is that to loosen, spin them towards the front regardless of the side, and towards the rear to tighten.
 
FWIW the MGAs (except Twin Cam/Deluxe) all had the 12 tpi knock offs, all readily available after market.

Moss offers the 12 tpi in safety style octagonal knock offs.
 
MGAs also use roller bearings though, while MGB uses tapered bearings. Unless I remember incorrectly, the two hubs do not interchange.

Agreed, but so what? He was after knock offs, not replacement hubs. The MGA and early MGB used spinners identical to his fine thread Healey items and Moss offers the non-eared versions which is what I took him to be after. The spinners don't care whether the hub they are going on has one bearing or another....

BTW, not all MGAs used roller beariongs. Twin Cams and deluxe has taper rollers like the MGB.
 
Sorry Bill, I thought you were saying that hubs were interchangeable between MGA and MGB. I didn't realize you were talking about the spinners themselves.

Thanks Marv please don't bother. An MG club member here in St. Louis offered me the knockoffs.
