Off to a great bloody start.

I wanted to do 2 simple tasks today. Remove the distributor and change the oil.

Distributor is stuck. I removed the clamp from the block and the dist is stuck solid. Going to blast it with pb blaster but are there any other things I can do to get it out? Rotates fine with the engine.

Oil filter also stuck. It's resisted all attempts so far to get it off including the screwdriver through the can trick. And just to let me know where I really stand it drew blood.

I guess its time for a beer and a bandage.

Stewart,

Just another day at the office... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

It's not the mountain that wears you down but the pebble in your shoe... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

get a monster pair of channellocks for the oil filter, don't know what to tell you about the dizzy. Have 3 more beers and you won't care. That's what I like most about my B, there's always another day

Get an oil filter wrench. It looks like a set of pliers with giant oil filter shaped jaws. Doubles as an industrial jar lid opener.

I finaly got the filter off. Took a very nasty looking pair of vice grips and a hammer. Going to let pb blaster do its thing till tomarrow afternoon. Hopefully that will do the trick but I'm at a loss as to why its stuck.

I've not had that happen but I remember John Twist telling us during one of his rolling tech sessions at MG2007 to always grease the portion of the distributor body where it goes into the block. I guess I now know why!

What's a "PB Blaster?" and how would Peanut Butter help? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Seriously, can you rotate the distributor body or is it frozen as well?

Adam

Stewart, a liberal dose of PB Blaster and the help of a strap wrench has always worked for me to free a stuck distributor. A light smear of anti-sieze on reassembly insures that it won't happen again.

Update for the morning

I was able to get the distributor to rotate freely about 20 degrees or so but it's still firmly stuck. I can pull it out maybe a mm or so but no further however I can see the distributor shaft is not moving with the body so I'm guessing that the drive dog is stuck.

Any ideas?

victory is mine

It's out only took a 4lb sledge a sawzall chisel a plethera of naughty words and some luck. Now I just need to get it out of the distributor housing as it's in there solid.

I'm glad I have a 45d4 sitting on the shelf

Gotta few extra dem myself. If'n I ever have trouble I know which tool will get er done!

Stewart I'm not laughing, because I have to pull my distributor, and I'm afraid the same thing is going to happen. My distributor is stuck so tight right now that I have to tap it with something to set the timing.

Regards John

Hope you didn't damage anything inside the block! Now, I'd be worried about what else is stuck in that engine...make sure you check the oil pressure real closely.

It's going to be interesting to see if it will run or not. Hopefully nothing else was hurt as all the force applied was either parallel to the block or away from the block. I think tomarrow afternoon I'm going to go ahead and cut the top of the distributor and take whats left over to a machine shop and see if they can press it out.

Worse comes to worse and it needs a rebuild I can apply what I learned from the first one I did and make a few improvements. Heck a freshly built up engine would look great in the living room over the winter. Hmm wonder if I could find a piece of glass to put over it and use it as a coffee table.
