I need to replace some *very* old red fiber washers on an old SOLEX carb.

I know the approximate dimensions of the various old washers. Example: OD 12mm, ID 10mm, width 2mm. Thickness 1mm.

How do I figure out the official metric designation of the washers so I can order what I need?

I see listings such as M3, M10, etc. But how does that relate to ID, and OD (and thus, width) and thickness?

Do the metric labels (M3, M10, etc.) apply equally to washers made of steel, copper, fiber, rubber, etc.?

Any suggestions?

I cannot answer your question, but there's a company in England, Carburettor Hospital Ltd, who stock bits and pieces for carbs and coudl possibly supply the exact things you're looking for.

Seems puzzling that I can't find a source for metric washers here in the USA.

One of the things I love about McMaster-Carr is that they give dimensional "CAD" drawings of almost everything they sell. Also worth checking the non-metric sizes, as they are frequently good approximations to what you are looking for.

PS, I meant to explain, there is no universal standard for what a designation like "M10" actually means, except whatever it is will presumably fit over a M10 bolt. So the only way to know for sure is to either measure one yourself (eg local Ace hardware) or order from someone who gives actual dimensions. MMC is by no means the only supplier that does (others include Fastenal, Grainger, Maryland Metrics etc), but I find them easiest to deal with. Their prices are not the cheapest, but their service is outstanding.

Of course, it helps that they have a warehouse just a few miles from my home. I can literally phone in an order at 10 AM on Saturday and pick it up at "will call" in a few hours. :smile:

The washers are for the jets and plugs in the Solex 32PAITA carb in my old Mercedes. Royze sells a rebuild kit for that carb, but the washers aren't the right size. I contacted them and they're investigating the problem, which may be a simple labeling issue. Rick at Royze asked me what size washers I needed, but as my old washers are long of tooth (worn and fuzzy ... like me), I can't do a valid measurement.

I can measure the jets and plugs themselves, but that doesnt' tell me the outside diameter or thickness.
