Oh! You have no idea what you have just started.......![]()
Anybody got any ideas how to use this to melt out a broken off stud in a cast iron manifold if it's broken below the surface?
Healey Rick,I've been able to pull off that trick with a torch before, but you only get one shot at it. Best bet is to drill, and use an extractor. Heat is mandatory with that operation too. Bernz-o-matic with a bottle of MAPP gas should do for a stand in for a torch.
Oh yea! That seems to be pretty neat! If it's just a broken bolt, you can likely just drill it out. It's those really hard things like taps and broken extractors that are really fun. If you were closer, I'd have you come over and we'd get that bugger out in a jiff!..... or is that Jiffy-pop?From what I've seen, the best way to pull off that trick is to find a machine shop with an EDM machine: https://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...ng-broken-tap/
But if you could pull it off with a microwave oven while making some Newman's Own Microwave Popcorn, , that would be cool, too. Always love to see your location as Horseheads, in the 70s it meant we were getting close to the Grand Prix of the U.S.
Wrong post, Sorry. PJCool metal melter! Love stuff like that!
Guys: I always use a left-handed drill bit with the electric drill in reverse.
This tends to loosen the broken stud and it will often "unscrew" as you are drilling. Even if it doesn't come out, this may help loosen it a bit more before using the extractor (and I have to say, I'm not a real big fan of extractors.......if they break off, you're really up the creek without a paddle).
And yes, RIck....when we were heading up to the F1 races at The Glen back in the '60s and '70s, the sign for Horseheads always meant we were close.
Actually, we *still* go up that weekend; our VRG event is held on the old F1 weekend.
I'm sad that next year we won't be able to go up due to Fall paving at The Glen.
