Meguiar's Quik Clay Detailing System

The MG club recently had a Saturday morning tech session with the local Meguiar's representative. Although he showed us a number of useful products and techniques, I recently tried one on one of my non-LBC vehicles.

Last spring, my truck sat under a cottonwood tree when it was leafing out. The hood and top were covered with sticky little "leaf hulls" (for lack of knowing what they are really called). During the spring and summer, I tried a half dozen different tar removers, bug removers, cleaners, polishes, etc., and nothing would remove the leaf residue.

After the tech session , I bought Meguiar's Quik Clay Detailing System, which consists of detailing clay and a clay lubricant. Although the clay required considerably more "elbow grease" than I expected, it did remove the leaf residue and cleaned and polished paint on the hood and top to a sheen not seen in several years. I topped it off with some leftover Meguiar's NXT wax that I had previously used on the MGA. Now the truck looks nearly as good as it did when I bought it.

Has anyone else used detailing clay for hard-to-remove tar, paint, or other residue? What were the results and would you recommend it for classic car paints (which I am still leary of doing)? I would be grateful for any help on this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
 
We use clay bars on our vehicles at least once a year. They do a great job. As far as I know they are safe for all finishes but if you are in any doubt I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the clay bar.
 
I've used the Mothers clay bar on my wifes 02 Jeep and on my 93 Volvo (the TR6's paint is shot). My Volvo is parked under a row of 5 pine trees on one side of my driveway and is constantly bombarded with pine needles, sap, and bird crap. Since I am somewhat lazy, I sometimes go a few weeks without washing the car, and the buildup after that kind of time is significant. ALso, the car is black, which makes it worse. Anyway, yes, the clay bar is more of an effort to use, but I've gotten excellent results with it. My buddy turned me on to it, he's been using it on his Supra TT for a long time. As far as I know, it's supposed to be safe on both clear coated cars and cars without, and all paint types, but I would check with a paint shop or a detailer just to be sure. The mothers kit also comes with a bottle of the lubricant, which can also be used as a between washes quick detailing polish.
 
I'm a BIG fan of Meguiar's products - but their clay-bar is about the worst I've ever seen. Try Mother's or "Clay Magic". You need not use their included lubricant, just a spray bottle with good quality water mixed with car-wash liquid will work fine.

I've use clay on every car I've had recently, including my Miata after I had it 2-weeks (what a difference too by the way), and my '77 MGB. If you want to do a full treatment to your paint try claying it, then use something like Meguiar's paint cleaner (can't remember the number), then NXT or a combo of Meguiar's #20 followed by a top layer of #26.

I swear by Griots clay, use it every spring...clay, polish & wax. All I have to do the rest of the year is touch up with detailer
