I found out about this abandoned track while reading the book "Weird Illinois" in Barnes & Noble. Curious I did a web search of this odd place, and found this amazing website. Click on the vintage photos section for a plethora of photos of some our favorite cars. (Triumphs and Austin Healeys particularly featured, as well as Alfas and Vettes.)
Be aware, some photos are a little gruesome, check out the link on why this place closed for more details. I haven't been to this track ever, but I would love to visit the woods that have been made of it.

I live quite close to Raceway Woods, as the MIR property is now known. You can walk just about the entire track in one way or another. I have quite a few photos of the track, taken a coupla summers ago. [image][/image]

that's a thumbnail of the old silo. I have others, but don't want to upload them to ImageShack on my creaky dialup connection. I'll try tomorry somewhere there's DSL.

It's really a shame that race tracks like this didn't survive. I'm sure the track had its share of problems, but the racing seems to have been more exciting than on the ovals.

And still is more exciting. Of course just the use of actual cars is more exciting to me. NASCAR and most other forms of racing use funnycars now.
