When I awoke my baby ('63 BJ7) from her winter slumber the direction indicators were misbehaving. One (driver side rear) was cured by 'bulb fiddling'the other not so lucky. It is passenger side front. The flasher unit is working because the three others flash but there appears to be no power getting to the fourth. I have steady power i.e not intermitent (flashing) at the connectors located at the bottom end of the steering wheel column but nothing at the bulb housing. Is this an indication of flasher relay box trouble?

There is a good chance that some of the flasher relay contacts are not making good connection.

The flasher relay terminal layout should be terminals 1 thru 4, top to bottom, front of the box, toward front of car. Terminals 5 thru 8, top to bottom, rear of box, toward rear of car. These numbers should be embossed in the top of the relay cover.

Check: With the turn switch set for right turn, relay terminal 8 should read steady 12 volts to ground. The RT relay should be clicking. Terminal 1 should be intermittantly hot from the flasher can. Terminal 6 should be intermittantly hot to the RF lamp, terminal 7 intermittantly hot to RR.

With the turn switch set for left turn, relay terminal 8 should read steady 12 volts to ground. The LT relay should be clicking. Terminal 1 should be intermittantly hot from the flasher can. Terminal 2 should be intermittantly hot to the LF lamp, terminal 3 intermittantly hot to LR.

The cover can be gently pried up around it's edges & removed. The tiny relay contacts can be "very gently" cleaned. Even a rough piece of paper can be drawn between them. If you bend the delicate contacts even slightly, chances are good that the box will no longer work, so be very careful.

You may wish to remove & tag the wires & remove the box to work on it.
Good luck,
D

John, Sounds like you have corroded terminals inside the DR-10 relay box. Last month there was a good article in the latest A-H Marque Mag that outlined how to repair this DR-10 relay box, utilizing modern replacable relays that fit right inside retaining 'the original look'.

thank you for all info.I am in luck at present! I went thru. Davids check list and found the terminal to the misbehaving light was not hot. Not too Keen on taking the flasher unit box apart this end of the season was wondering if there was a bypass 'jumper'method. This thought so upset the car that the flasher started to work! I have job 1 already listed for next Winter storage time. Thank you David, Johnny and RF Thom for the articles, I now know a little more about the car.
