Back in the mid 80's I was very peripherally involved with the Canadian Farmers Survival Organization. This arose in response to the severe financial crisis of the time (remember interest rates in the high teens) and predatory lending by the banks among other things. At the time the RCMP were monitoring phones lines of people connected. The response on the part of the farmers was to refer to each other by their wives maiden names - everyone in the community knew - outsiders did not.
