TR5/TR250 Maybe a TR250????

I saw this ad on craigslist today. Is it just a modded TR4 or 250? Obviously the engine isn't original, and maybe that would explain the bonnet hump down the middle rather than on the side. But the hardtop and spare wheel compartment, besides being hideous, aren't anything I've ever seen before. And the grill looks like they tried to cross w/ an old small mouth. Any ideas? Am I just an uninformed newbie?

Could be, since that car has been all over every forum/mail list that I'm on (including some not devoted to Triumphs).

Basically, the car on Craigslist has been heavily modified in almost every aspect. The top appears to be permanently attached (note there is no joint in the door seals) and bears no resemblance to anything Triumph ever delivered. The grill, bumpers, rear end, interior, etc. are all heavily altered.

At least Johnny Cash stuck with Cadillac parts !

What I'm waiting for is someone to contact the seller, and ask about the commission number, so we can find out if it started life as a TR4A or TR250. I'm guessing the latter, but there doesn't seem to be any clear indication.

Judging by the sorts of mods it has, this car was customized in the early Seventies or late Sixties. The faux Continental kit, California hardtop, and the "cleaning up" of badges were all in style back then. The high-back buckets in crushed velour would have been cool then too.

Like a Seventies custom van, this little car is a piece of its time.

68.. could be either, but likley a TR250. But either way there's not enough of the original car left to make any difference. Looks like the customization was done fairly nicely, I'm also guessing 70s... Not my thing. not at all. Gyaaahh!
That's a hard sell right there. But I'm sure someone out there will fall in love with it.
