Tom, I'm sure you know Maybach made engines for German aircraft back around the first world war. not much horse power but very light in weight, which made up for the low HP. I'm told they were used in some military vehicles, but not with great success.
Paul - like I wrote in the Bertha Benz thread - it was Maybach engines that powered the early Zeppelins. The Graf Zeppelin made a round the world flight, using Maybachs.
