There still a number of options in different scales. HO and 1/32 are the two most prominent choices. Depends on space and detail of the cars. A Tomy International 4 lane set will get you started with a lot of track, four cars in what is called HO but closer to 1/64 scale. Ebay also has lots of track and cars available. I would avoid the Lifelike sets as the slot is too shallow. In the larger scales, Artin makes some very inexpensive track, but Scalextric or Carrera seem to be the two leaders in the market.
It still can be a fun hobby for kids. Check out HO World for a starting point. I can also link you to a lot of other resources if you are interested. I have gotten my son-in-law to get into the hobby again, and several people have stopped by my layout with their children being interested in learning more as well.
