may be of interest to all you slot car enthusiasts

Slot cars were very big when I was a kid! My car was a blue Scarab!

Great website! I like the specs on the different track layouts!

Basil,
That would possibly be the Monogram Scarab. I have one built up 1/24 slot car of those, and two extra body kits to build some day.
Weewillie,
I had not seen that website before. Thanks. It looks like there are some good resources there.
By the way. Team USA won the H:O 24 Hours of LeMans in Derbyshire England for the third straight year...

I have a good collection of HO cars. mostly Thunder-jets and Tuff-Ones.
That's a neat site, but they've gone much further than I ever will with the dynamics of thier tracks.
I'll forward it to my cousin. he's a physics teacher, and he likes to use things like slotcars to demonstrate principles of physics.

Ah, slot racing....

I used to rewind the electric motors for more speed back in the early 60s.

Whilst wearing bell-bottom pants.

Scalextric! They are great, and still in business. I grew up with these as a kid. My slot car of choice was a red Mini Cooper with a checker-board roof. Many years later and - suprise - my daily driver is a red Mini Cooper with a checker-board roof! Maybe I should grow up - or maybe not.

I loved slot cars as a kid - the old Sears special. Any one have a good suggestion for a decent one today, it would be fun to get one for my boys.

Yeah, I remember rewinding them as well. My favorite was a Cox Lotus 40. Silastic (I think that's what they were called) tires. I seem to remember reworking the controllers as well. Cars would fly off the track if you weren't careful. I spent lots of dollars and time at the local track around '66.

Bell-bottoms were optional, but ubiquitous.

Sideache,
There still a number of options in different scales. HO and 1/32 are the two most prominent choices. Depends on space and detail of the cars. A Tomy International 4 lane set will get you started with a lot of track, four cars in what is called HO but closer to 1/64 scale. Ebay also has lots of track and cars available. I would avoid the Lifelike sets as the slot is too shallow. In the larger scales, Artin makes some very inexpensive track, but Scalextric or Carrera seem to be the two leaders in the market.
It still can be a fun hobby for kids. Check out HO World for a starting point. I can also link you to a lot of other resources if you are interested. I have gotten my son-in-law to get into the hobby again, and several people have stopped by my layout with their children being interested in learning more as well.

I just thought I might get back into it again after an absense of about 40 years, and to keep me out of the better half's hair when I can't get down to the shed to work on the cars because of the snow over the winter.

Many Thanks - That's, maybe, a good christmas present for all the boys in the house - me included.

Re: may be of interest to all you slot car enthusi

Christmas morning when I was 7 or 8 I can still clearly see that long oval 2 slot model motoring track all set up with a line of colorful HO scale race cars sitting diagonally along the track, Le Mans style.
There were Porsches, Alfas, Ford GT40s, Can-Ams, street cars, hot rods and all kinds of stuff. And a big box of extra track to make all kinds of circuits.
My dad had bought the entire collection from my cousins, and even though they were used, it's still to this day my favorite christmas gift.
Now if I still had 'em. I wound up taking most of them apart when they quit running, and tried to fix 'em. But I was little and diden't know much, and was facinated by the internals. needless to say, most of them are long gone. I had to rebuild my collection when I got older.
