Seventy-five years ago today, air ship Hindenburg exploded when landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey.

Five days later, a memorial service was held in New York City for crew and passengers killed in the disaster. Location: Pier 86.

Pier 86 was the Hamburg-Amerika Line pier in 1937; today it is the home of the USS Intrepid Museum.

I was stationed at Lakehurst in 1956/57. Blimp squadron ZP-756. Funny, very rare that anyone ever talked about that incident. PJ
 
I spent my teenage years in that area. I've been out to the site of the crash.
If you walk down the street a bit from my Dad's house, you can still see Hanger #1. I drive by the base all the time.

I remember the blimp guys flying overhead as we were kids. You could always tell the slow, droning sound of a blimp. We would wave at the guys and they'd wave back!

My brother used to ride his bicycle to the base for his high school job.....he'd sweep up around the helicopters. Now he works for Sikorsky.

We usually only flew around 500 feet. Easy to see everything on the ground. We would fly out about a mile off the coast and drop a fish, a sonar device that was towed through the water to detect subs close to the beach. Along with advanced detection devices, the newer subs became faster than the blimps and ended their usefulness. We even had a cook on board! PJ
