Maximum Advance Question

I've been strobe timing my Mk1 3000 at approximately 35 degrees per the maximum advance in the factory manual.

Am reading things on the internet that seem to imply some other advance is supposed to be added onto this figure, resulting in a total figure in the neighborood of 50 degrees.

My understanding from many other cars is the maximum advance is just that--it's the most you'll ever see with the vacuum attached and revving the car up to a point where no more advance is seen.

Would like to know if this is true on the Healey or is it somehow added onto something else.

Hi Steve, I think your interpretation of the Factory manual is correct. I think you should see something on the order of 35 Degrees Max at approximately 4000 RPM.---Fwiw--Keoke

Hi Steve,
I agree with the 35 degree, static plus centrifugal, maximum advance. This advance is set with the vacuum disconnected.

It would be very possible for the vacuum advance to add another 10 to 20 degrees to this number under LIGHT engine load conditions. This vacuum advance is never present under heavy engine loads & so is not a factor except to confuse the timing issue if it is connected.
